ICIMOD Atmosphere Initiative Doctoral Fellowship, 2017

Applications are invited for ICIMOD Atmosphere Initiative Doctoral (Ph.D.) Fellowship within the HKH region. Applicants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan or any international student currently doing research on atmospheric science in the HKH region are eligible to apply for this fellowship.

ICIMOD aims to select two-thirds of the fellows from ICIMOD member countries and for half the fellows to be women.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is a regional intergovernmental learning and knowledge sharing center serving the eight regional member countries of the Hindu Kush-Himalayas – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan – and based in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Course Level: Fellowship is available for pursuing Ph.D. program.

Study Subject: ICIMOD is open to specific research questions/hypotheses within the following broad categories:

  • Trace gasses measurement/modeling
  • Aerosol measurement/modeling
  • Aerosol–cloud/monsoon interactions
  • Regional and urban air quality modeling
  • Persistent winter fog over the Indo-Gangetic Plain
  • Emission characterization and inventory development
  • Air pollution impacts on health, cryosphere, agriculture, and ecosystems
  • Remote sensing technology for atmospheric science research.

Scholarship Award: Fellowship awards:

  • Allowance of USD 1,000 per month up to a year while at ICIMOD or ICIMOD designated sites.  Expat Ph.D. Fellows will receive additional USD200 per month for accommodation. Additionally, accommodation for 10 calendar days upon arrival and a gratis visa on arrival will be taken care of by ICIMOD.
  • Travel cost from the student’s home institution to ICIMOD Job Vacancy at time of joining and Job Vacancy at time of repatriation back to student`s home institution will be borne by ICIMOD.
  • Reimbursement of other travel costs and other pre-approved expenses will be reimbursed up to a maximum of USD 2000 per year; The costs covers travel to the region, field visits, participation in conferences and publication fee for one open-access peer-reviewed journal paper per year to communicate work done with ICIMOD, provided that ICIMOD scientist is a co-author on the paper.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for this Fellowship:

The candidate should meet the following requirements:

  • Citizen of one of the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan; or any international student currently doing research on atmospheric science in the HKH region.
  • Preference will be given to HUC member institutions.
  • Must be an admitted/registered Ph.D. student.
  • Letter of support from Ph.D. supervisor or Head of Department is required once short-listed
  • Candidates should be willing to work in an interdisciplinary team and have excellent analytical, technical, and communication skills.
  • Must be willing to be based at ICIMOD headquarters or ICIMOD designated sites during the period of the fellowship.

Nationality: Citizen of one of the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan; or any international student currently doing research on atmospheric science in the HKH region are eligible to apply for this fellowship.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must be an admitted/registered Ph.D. student.

English language Requirements: Candidates should be willing to work in an interdisciplinary team and have excellent analytical, technical, and communication skills.
